Amazon Bestseller List

Last night, I saw that, after three months, Before I Break hit the Amazon Bestseller List in LGBT issues at #97!

At first I was really shocked, and while it only stayed on the list for an hour, I felt so accomplished.  Then I woke up this morning and Before I Break was #48 in LGBT issues!  That was a huge jump, especially since it went off the list, and now currently it is #57.  No, it's not #1, but I still feel like I finally got what I've been waiting for.  My book finally has the attention it deserves and I'm so proud of it.

Thank you to every person who made this possible, and for those who haven't read Before I Break yet, it is available on Amazon right now in the Bestseller List in LGBT issues!

Bands I Want Albums From Right Now

I know this is really off topic from writing, but I had to post it anyway.

Bands that I want new album's from right now (but unfortunately haven't heard any news on one yet). And yes, some of these could probably be categorized as Christian bands.

1. Skillet: Oh darling, why are you waiting so long to give me something new? I know, I know, you just released a new album in 2013, but since I tend to notice a two year gap between this band's albums, I am expecting one in 2015. And I better get it. Right now.

2. Icon For Hire: I know, I just started listening to this band like a week ago, but where's lucky album #3? I need it right now because I think my heart will explode if I don't get it.

3. Fireflight: Before you yell at me, I am aware this band has a new album coming out in 2015, but we've gotten no track listing, no samples, no nothing. Not only that, but the album was SUPPOSED to be released this last summer, but then got pushed to October, and then got pushed to May because the lead singer is having a baby. If we ever get this album, it'd be a miracle.

4. EarlyRise: This is an indie band I've liked for a while now, and they started a Kikstarter page to fund their second album in 2012, but have made no updates, no NOTHING since they reached their goal. What are they waiting for? Are they out drinking and partying with the money that was given to them? Buying themselves presents. We haven't seen any cover art, seen a track list, or even heard a guitar rift from this band since 2011. And they post weekly updates on Facebook about nothing important. How about give your fans something they care to hear about? Thanks.

5. Paramore: Their most recent album came out in 2013 and then just recently re-released it as a deluxe album. *yawns* The deluxe only had ONE new song. And the rest were all live versions. Seriously, I'm a ParaWhore for Paramore, and if they don't give me a new album soon, I'm going to believe they're Para-No-More.

6. Panic! at the Disco (aka unofficially, The Brendon Urie Project): I know, I'm a big meanie, but I seriously feel like Panic! at the Disco is over. I mean, on the new album, Brendon was the only one on the cover of it, and his guitarist was in rehab the entire time he was on tour, so Brendon was doing it all with paid people to fill the missing slots. If the band is breaking up, please just let me know, because I'm not interested in a solo project. BUT if the band is staying together...GIVE ME MORE.

7. Evanescence: What is up with this band? Are they over? Are they not over? Just tell me something! Anything! Give me a sign of you existence, please. If you're dead, I'll go cry in a hole now.
8. We As Human: This Christian band has released one album and I want more! Ten songs is not enough to hold me over. I mean, seriously, it's been forever now. Just give me some more of you heavy screaming and angst and relate-able music that is actually GOOD and uplifting? Please. I need some more...I'm only human. *winks excessively*

9. We Are The Fallen: While I think this band is over (simply because they've been compared too much to Evanescence considering it consists of three former member of Evanescence), there has been no news. And you can shoot me if you wish, but I actually like this band more than Evanescence and want more. Right now. Just tell me if this band's dead or not so I can stop anxiously waiting for nothing.

So there you have it. Those are all the bands I want albums from right this second, and if I don't get it, well...I'll be one unhappy child.

Overcoming Writer's Block (And Other Random Topics)

I've decided tonight that I'm going to try and exercise, so if you're reading this blog post, then you're going to be reading my random thoughts as I try to overcome writer's block.  Now, I can't guarantee that there will be anything remotely interesting in this post, because you know, as the title says, it's just random thoughts that are coming to my head.  I just went and made some Mint Medley tea in hopes that it'll help get some thoughts flowing because this writer's block is really kicking my butt.

As of right now I'm trying to write two books:  Shadow's Wings (the second book in The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles) and Once I Fall (the sequel to Before I Break).  Both books I am currently having an issue starting and it's driving my crazy.  I can't even think of a good first sentence.  What stresses me out even more is that I have deadlines that need to be met and I've been sitting here for nearly a month and a half and haven't written anything because I feel so brain dead.

I think every creative person's worst nightmare is the thought of losing their creativity for good.  That's exactly how I feel right now, like every creative bone in my body has been crushed to a million pieces.  I feel like I'll never be able to write again.  I don't think anyone who's not creative understands the feeling, and it hurts.  It actually makes me go crazy.  While I do believe there's a scientific reason for writer's block, I'm not sure it's been proven what exactly causes it yet, but it really sucks!

I truly don't know what to do, and as I set here at 12:43 AM typing this while my brother sleeps, I desperately wish I could be writing.  After the cliffhanger at the end of the first book in The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles, I want to know how things turn out, yet here I am as dumb and oblivious as I've been for 6 weeks.

Earlier I was reading The Witch With No Name by Kim Harrison, the last book in The Hollows series, and boy do I wish I could finish it!  For some reason I've been lacking in the reading department and...I don't really know why.  I think something's going on with me, but maybe I'm wrong...Anyway, I want to finish the book because it's the LAST book in a series I've loved for so many years and hate that it's taking me so long to read it.  I am also reading Apollyon by Jennifer L. Armentrout and really love it as well.

What else can I randomly talk about?  Well, right now I'm listening to my new favorite indie band called WE ARE TWIN, and I really recommend checking them out.  They're great, truly, and give me really good inspiration.  It's not my typical style in music, as it sounds more...dance and pop, and I don't know, it's odd.  Like...80's?  90's?  Definitely doesn't sound like 2000s, but that's what I like about it.

And because I'm tired and think I have some tidbit of interest in reading...I am going to go do that, so thanks for reading this completely pointless blog post about my not-so-interesting life.  :)  Stay turned for my books coming out next year!

Before I Break Sequel...Or Two?

Alright guys, I have a very important announcement to make, and while many of you are probably going to be upset about the idea, I know many of you are going to be ecstatic.

Ever since Before I Break released in September, I've been struggling with whether or not I am going to write a sequel to Before I Break, because originally the idea was meant to be a standalone novel.  But by the time I finished the book, I knew there was more to tell.  I figured that I would wait to see the readers' responses, and if they liked it, I would write more.  On Goodreads, I even made a section where readers could tell me whether or not they want a sequel to Before I Break.

Of course, that got no responses, but I did hear from a few readers, and all of them told me that they believed the book should remain a standalone.  It wasn't like I didn't understand, I mean, I wrote it AS a standalone.  Hell, even the epilogue skips ten years, so readers probably think that by writing a sequel, I'd be majorly screwing it up.

I, on the other hand, don't believe that.

This right here is news to everyone:  I actually started writing a sequel for Before I Break almost immediately after it came out and didn't like where it was going and put it on hold.  But after having a few months to separate myself from that work and focus on something else, I need to admit something.

I miss Cyril.  I miss Melissa, and Avery, and Austin, and even Jake for crying out loud.  I miss those characters more than I think I miss real people, because to me they were real and I feel like they deserve better than they got.  I feel like their stories just aren't over.  I feel like, if I leave them hanging like I did in Before I Break, there's so much we miss.

Think about it.  Our lives are always changing and things are always happening to us that make a good story.  Every day of our life is a chapter, and I feel the same way for these characters.  They deserve more than a teeny, tiny book that tells only one portion of their lives, because everything that happened in Before I Break affects them as people later on.

And I know after reading Before I Break, most people were wondering, "Who the hell is Jessica?"  Well, don't worry, you're going to find out.

It's taken me a long time to say this, but after getting a request, I am going to make this announcement now.  There are going to be two more books.

YES.  TWO MORE BOOKS.

So what are the concepts of these two books?  I won't say much because I don't want to spoil for those who have yet to read Before I Break but the next two books are going to be called Once I Fall and Until It's Done.  Both books are going to be set to release before the end of 2016.

I've truly missed these characters with all my heart.  Here are some of the things I will say in regards to the books.

  • Once I Fall will consist of Cyril's point of view and Melissa's point of view.
  • Once I Fall will take place in between some of the time of the ten years between the last chapter of Before I Break and it's epilogue.
  • Until It's Done will be written in a dual-POV of Cyril's two boys.
  • A short story is planned to be included in one of these novels from Jake's POV.
  • While there are no set release dates, the plan is to publish Once I Fall in 2015 and Until It's Done in 2016.
So there you have it, everyone.  What do you think about the announcement?

Festival of Scribes 2014: Facebook Event

Hey everyone!

This week I came up with an idea that I wasn't so sure about, so I went to one of my indie author friends and she said it's a great idea.  So now, December 1st through 5th, we are hosting a Facebook event called Festival of Scribes 2014.  This event is so far being held by five authors, though more may be added before then.  For five days, we will be promoting our books, doing giveaways, etc.  As of right now, I have a few things planned, such as e-book giveaways, a live excerpt reading session of Forbidden Darkness, a Q&A session, and a few other things.

I urge every single one of you to join, even if it's just to see what we were doing.  Most of the event will be fan based, which is why we need you to be there.  The author list is as follows.

***

Alec John Belle (obviously):  Author of Before I Break and the upcoming Forbidden Darkness Chronicles series.

Nikki Rae:  Author of The Sunshine Series and her brand-new novella, The Donor (which I read by the way and it's amazing!)

Scott Colbert:  Author of Barbed Wire Kisses

Toni Canada:  Author of Love Scandal and Deceit

Jefferri L. Andrews:  Author of The Macos Adventures Series

***

Clearly we are a diverse group of individuals, which was the whole point.  We want to reach to people who love different genres and expand our fan base.  So please, join our event and check us out.  There's romance, horror, paranormal, and adventure authors.  We want you to be there for sure!

FORBIDDEN DARKNESS Release Day Party on Facebook

Fellow readers!

Anyone who is interested in The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles should attend my release day party I have planned for Facebook on January 9, 2015.  There will be times where you can ask questions, possibly win a free copy of the first book, and more!  It's still in the early stages on planning, so I'll have more information in a few weeks.

In the meantime, go check it out and tell your friends!

#AlexFromTarget? More Like #WhoCares

Let me start off by saying I have nothing against this Alex From Target person.  I mean, after all, he's just a normal guy who works at a Target and has become an Internet sensation in less than a week.  I do not hate or dislike Alex.  What I dislike is the fame someone is getting for doing nothing besides being attractive.

So you're telling me that I sit here and spend my money to try and write books for people that mean something to others and get no attention, but someone working behind a counter at Target does?  It really just shows what importance really is to our country and it actually makes me quite upset.  How does someone who doesn't even try to get noticed become famous (especially when he openly admitted on Ellen he has not talent), but then me, an author who's trying to reach people through his writing, can barely get a new follower on Twitter a day?  Or can barely get someone to read my book?

Like I said, I don't hate Alex.  I hate the world we live in that makes people like me have to struggle to get noticed, but then we make stupid people like Nash Grier and hot people like Alex From Target famous?  Please.  Just give me a break already.

My Response To The Cartoon Network Controversy

What defines controversy?  The definition of controversy is, "a disagreement, typically prolonged, public and heated."  For some reason, one of the biggest controversies in the world right now is whether being LGBT is right or wrong, and for some, things can go from just being disagreements to turning ugly.  An example of this type of ugliness is as follows.

This is a thread of comments in response to Cartoon Network wanting to put their first gay kiss in a show.  According to Opposing News, the episode aired with a kiss on the cheek rather than the initial kiss on the lips.  This, of course, got hundreds of comments, including just a few that I showed you above.

When I first read the article, I was disappointed that Cartoon Network would make a fuss about such a small thing and take it out and make it a kiss on the cheek instead, and silly old me believed that a majority of people would agree with me.  Of course, I'd say about 15% of the comments agreed with my belief, that the kiss should have stayed in the episode, and the rest were rude, hateful, and just outright mean.

My first thought was, Why is this even happening in 2014?

The reason is simple.  People are extremely closed-minded and there's no other way around it.  This thread of comments made me angry, hurt, and had me questioning whether it was okay to be who I am.  Why is it that so many people intend to be so cruel to people that haven't even done anything wrong?  From a religious standpoint, I can almost understand why someone would disagree (though you can disagree without being hateful, which the Bible clearly warns against hate), but nonreligious people were freaking out as well.  To me, this is a big problem.

We live in a world where homosexuality exists.  Whether people want to believe it or not, it's not a recent thing.  It's not new.  It's definitely not a hundred years old, two hundred, or even three hundred years old.  People didn't just wake up one day and decide, "You know what?  We're going to like people of the same-sex because we want it to be trendy, yet spend the rest of our lives being miserable."  Homosexuality has been around since the beginning of time!

With that being said, why do people act like it's a current "explosion" and that homosexuals have "come to take over" everything?  The answer is simple as well.  Homosexuals have only just recently been given rights in America over the last few years, so it gives people more courage to come out and be who they truly are.  If you hate someone for who they are and how they were born, there is really something wrong with you.

Now, in regards to the Cartoon Network controversy, it shouldn't even be a controversy anymore.  Really, this LGBT rights thing has gotten so old that the battle should be won by now.  There are gay people on TV all the time because there are gay people all over.  Everywhere.  It's not just in America.  We need to start taking a chance and letting our children know that it's okay to be who who you are.

In regards to the haters:  Kissing is not sex.  Kissing is not, and never will be, a form of sex, and it literally makes no sense to me why some people deem this idea as inappropriate.  We are not brainwashing your kids.  If your kids see it, tell them it's wrong if that's what you believe, but the world deserves to know that gay people do exist and we deserve just as much recognition as straight people.  No one bats and eye when two straight characters kiss or hug or even date, but as soon as a gay character does, everyone wants to act like it's the end of the world.

Three words.  Get.  Over.  Yourself.

Two more words.  Grow up.

This is America and we all have rights.  No one deserves to be treated this badly, regardless of sexuality, because we are all people.  In the end, we're all flesh, bones, and blood, and the souls that live inside us.  Our genders, race, sexual orientation, and religion do not change who we are and that we are all truly the same on the inside.

I hope that people take the time to learn this truth.

The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles Release Dates

So the time has come for me to set the release dates for the first three books in The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles.  As everyone knows, I already announced the release date for the first book, but in case anyone missed it, the release dates are set as follows.

  1. Forbidden Darkness (The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles: Book One)  January 9, 2015.
  2. Shadow's Wings (The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles: Book Two)  May 21st, 2015.
  3. Fiery Passion (The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles: Book Three)  October 20th, 2015.
These release dates have a slight possibility of changing, but for the most part they are going to be set.  I hope that everyone is looking forward to the releases of these books like I am!

Forbidden Darkness Release Date Change

Many people have been highly anticipating the release of the first book in The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles, as seen in the beautiful cover above.  The original release date was planned for December 10, 2014, but now that release date is going to change.

The new release date is January 9, 2015.

It's not too big of a difference, but there is one main reason why the release date changed.  I felt as though with the December 10 release date I'd have enough time, but now I don't feel like I do.  I feel rushed, and if I rush the process, Forbidden Darkness won't be as good as I want it to be.  So fans and readers, please be patient.  I know you all want this just as much as I do, but things can't be rushed and are meant to be however they're meant to be.

In the meantime, I am beginning the sequel, titled Shadow's Wings, for NaNoWriMo.

New Serial Drama On Wattpad: Masquerade

This last Thursday, I wrote the Pilot "episode" for my new, free online series called Masquerade.  The series has only had 18 views so far, but I hope I get more over time.

Masquerade is about a school named Wellington High School and all the students that attend it.  There is someone at the school harassing and stalking the students anonymously and they're trying to find out who it is.  Sound familiar?  Yes, it is Pretty Little Liars influenced but follows a very different overall plot.  Very early on people will be able to tell the difference.

So every Thursday a new "episode" will be added.  Each "episode" contains a few different point of views, a simple beginning, middle, and cliffhanger ending.  It is read just like a book but is not divided by chapters, but episodes.  Hence the "serial drama" part, meaning I will update every week until this "season" is over.

Interested in checking it out?  Here's the link below.

Reasons Why I Probably Shouldn't Befriend My Readers...But Why I Do It Anyway.

As a new author, with only one book currently available and my second book coming out in a couple months, one could say that I'm desperate for readers.

First novel.
Second novel.

With this day in age, technology has given us as authors the ability to communicate with our readers, and many of us enjoy doing so.  I'm going to be the first to admit that I love talking with readers of my books, or people interested in reading my books.  For me, it means I am doing my job correctly and reaching out to a certain group of people and communicating with them.

But here are the reasons why I probably shouldn't be doing that.

Say for instance I befriend a reader, alright?  And we really do actually become friends, it makes the author-reader relationship tainted.  Yes, we're friends so that should be better, but if I befriend every reader I have, are they friends or readers?

Secondly, think about it like this:  I have differing opinions than a reader and we're friends and they know a lot about me because of the friendship I earned with them and we get into a fight over something that is in my writing or that I believe is right or wrong.  Chances are that person is probably never going to pick up another one of my books again because our "personal" relationship was ruined and it's not longer just a fan or follower.

So with those things in mind, I probably shouldn't go around befriending readers, right?

Well, here are the reasons why I do (but probably shouldn't).

I am an author and getting to know my readers makes things feel different.  It's not just me talking to people about my books, but they can give honest feedback and be a part of my life.  As a person with no very many friends, when the opportunity arises to meet some new people, I'm not one to back down, although 95% of the time I probably don't really like them all on a personal level.  But there's that little 5% chance that I could meet a real, true friend, and if them reading my books is what makes that friendship happen, why not go for it?

Everything happens for a reason.  So readers, do NOT hesitate to communicate with me.  I am on Facebook, Goodreads, and Twitter, so feel free to talk to me any time you wish.  Without you, there'd be no point in being an author and I have you personally to thank.

Forbidden Darkness Cover Reveal

When I got this cover in my email today, I nearly shat myself.  Not because it was ugly or anything, but because it was 100000% better than I thought it was going to be and I couldn't be anymore grateful.  This cover is so simple and so pretty that I couldn't even contain my excitement.

So I proudly present to you, the cover of FORBIDDEN DARKNESS!

This book can be pre-ordered off of Amazon for Kindle for $0.99 and I hope people give it the time of day that it deserves.  If you are not a contemporary YA reader and didn't like my first novel, this is paranormal urban romance, so yes.  Please check it out.

The Best Day Ever

A lot of people might think of this as an exaggeration but I really felt like tonight was the best night ever.  Not only did I have my book signing, but GLAAD--and yes, I mean THE GLAAD--did an interview me with me.

Apparently because of all my tweets about Spirit Day, they looked into me and then asked to interview me.  You can see the interview below.

Plus, I had a fantastic book signing and made my first bunch of cash.  I made 93 dollars and couldn't feel more proud of myself.  Thanks to GLAAD and this signing, all of my social media has been BLOWING up.  Thanks so much to everyone making this possible and I hope everyone had had a great Spirit Day!

Go Purple! GLAAD Spirit Day 2014

This year on October 16, we are celebrating GLAAD's Spirit Day, in support of the victims of bullying who are within the LGBT community.  It doesn't matter whether you're gay or straight.  NO ONE should be bullied for who they are.

As a victim of bullying myself, I understand the harm that it can do.  Every year, thousands of teenagers take their lives because they are bullied.  Let's take a look at some common statistics.

  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24.
  • LGB youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide (three times more likely for questioning) than their straight peers.  That's quite a lot!
  • Suicide attempts by LGB youth are 4 to 6 times more likely to result in injury, poisoning, or overdose that needs to be treated by a nurse or a doctor than their straight peers.
  • Nearly half of transgender people have thought about suicide, while one-quarter have actually attempted.
  • LGB youth coming from rejecting families are 8.4 times more likely to have attempted suicide than by their peers who are in low- or no-rejecting families.
  • 1 out of 6 students NATIONWIDE have seriously thought about suicide (grades 9-12) in the past year.
  • Suicide among black and Hispanic youth are 2 times more likely than white youth.
  • Each episode of victimization leads increases the likelihood of self-harming behavior by 2.5 times on average.

These things happen to many of us each and every day.  So this Thursday, on October 16, 2014, let's all wear purple to support those being bullied that are within the LGBT community.  It's time that we all come together and stand as one and welcome each other with open arms.

The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles: Book One Available for Pre-Order!

Lately I've been talking about my upcoming series, The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles, and I am very happy to announce that the first book, FORBIDDEN DARKNESS, can be pre-ordered on Amazon for Kindle!  If you would like a paperback, unfortunately Amazon doesn't allow a pre-order option for paperbacks for self-published books yet, so you'll have to wait for the actual release.

December 10th, 2014!

I'm over here doing the happy dance right now because I truly can't wait to share this series with you guys.  The link below will bring you to the ebook if you wish to pre-order.

BEFORE I BREAK'S One Month Anniversary!

Today is a very special day for me.  It has been exactly one month since the release of my very first book, BEFORE I BREAK.  One month.  4 weeks.  31 days.  744 hours, give or take.  For me, this is an all time high and I am extremely happy about how far I've come.

When religiously raised Cyril Hayes begins his junior year at East Hill High School, every choice he makes suffers a greater consequence, and while facing challenges of friends, family, and love, learns that hate and intolerance are also a very large part of our world today.

Cyril Hayes is seemingly just like any other male his age. He has the perfect girlfriend, Melissa Summers, his best friend, Jake Rivers, and a lawyer father who brings home enough money to support his family and then some. When Cyril begins his junior year, he doesn't expect his life to spiral out of control when he meets Avery Branson, the new kid in school who has a big secret: he's gay. At first, Cyril doesn't handle this truth well, due to the way he was raised, but as the story progresses, he ventures deep into the reality of homosexuality and begins to accept Avery for who he is.

Not everyone is happy with Cyril's new friend, including Jake, who believes that homosexuality is a sin and is refusing to budge his beliefs. But Avery isn't the only one at East Hill with secrets, and soon a tragedy will strike, knocking Cyril's world completely off balance and leaving a scar on his heart that will change his view of humanity all together.

When I first came up with the idea for this book, I wasn't exactly sure where I was going with it.  I remember the first day that I sat at the computer to actually write this book and I thought, "What do I even want to do with it when I finish it?  Publish it?  Keep it to myself?  Publish on Wattpad?"  I wasn't sure, but I knew it was a story that needed to be told.  The idea of a straight guy and a gay guy being friends seemed cheesy and almost boring at first, but the dynamics between Cyril and Avery were real, and they grew together as the story progressed.  By the time I finished, I was already craving to know more.

When I finished, I sent out a query letter to 100+ agents, only to be rejected by some (a few were a little harsher or rude than others) and completely ignored by the rest.  That was around the time that I started talking to Nikki Rae, the Amazon Bestselling Author of The Sunshine Series and The Donor.  She explained to me that she self-published her books and it was something that I was strongly considering, despite how many people said self-published authors were not successful.

Well, because of the type of person I am, I looked into it anyway.

Of course, Nikki was there through all the trials and tribulations.  At first, I couldn't understand how to do anything (How do I add the interior files?  How do I format?  How do I upload the cover?  How do I add the information?  Should I buy my own ISBN?) but she carefully explained everything when I needed her to.  Nikki Rae also designed the cover wrap for my book, and still for that, I am forever grateful!

When the book was released, I had no idea what was going to come of it.  Not a clue.  I figured it was going to take a while to read readers, but to my surprise, with the ebook being free for five days, the purchases were spiking up.  Of course, I made no money because it was free, but I was getting readers!  To a first time author that's pretty overwhelming because I couldn't wait to hear what readers thought.

To my utter disappointment, even still after a month goes by, I've gotten no reviews except from people I know.  Through this long, crazy process, though, I've learned that the book will get more noticed over time.  I know it will, because I'm not one to give up.  This has been my dream since I was a kid and I'm living it to the best that I can.  Everything all seems to be falling into place.

So what's up next for me?  There are a few things.

* I am writing the first book in my new series, The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles, which is set to be released a lot sooner than many people might think...it's about Monster Hunters and I think it's pretty cool!

* My short story, "Circus for a Psycho," is being published in a horror anthology by Metamorphosis Editing Services.  Now I am writing a dark romance short story for another one of their anthologies.

* I have upcoming book signings and presentations in Worcester, MA this month and in December.

So you know what?  I am proud of myself.  I've worked hard to achieve my dream and I think I've done a pretty good job.  With another month here, I know that I can make my dreams become a reality and I can do whatever I want if I put my mind to it.

Happy One Month, BEFORE I BREAK.  You showed me I can do anything if I put my mind to it.

Book Updates in the Air

First of all, before anything else, I would like to congratulate my friend for releasing her first book!

I certainly wish her well on her journey as an author.  I personally read The Pink Journal and it was a great read!  While short, it is leading up to a larger novel, The Pink Crayon, that she wrote and I am looking forward to reading that as well!

The synopsis is as follows.

Brooke Landers hasn't had an easy life. Her childhood friend Becky has been beside her through all of life's tragedies and heartaches. There has been so many of them for Brooke, especially the most regrettable one, which happened twenty-eight years ago. When Brooke is given a short amount of time to live, she immediately starts writing in her journal. The journal is a reflection of her life, her choices, and her regrets that have led up to the mistake that she made many years ago. It was a huge mistake and she seeks forgiveness before she leaves this world. In order to accomplish her goal, she has to find the person that has unknowingly been extremely close to her heart. This woman means more to Brooke than anything else, and her life was drastically altered because of the choices Brooke made. But will Brooke be able to find her in time?

And let me tell you!  I was kind of happy it was a short story rather than a full length novel because I desperately wanted to know who "she" was.  And yeah, kinda teared up a little.  I really can't wait to see where that goes.

***

Now, onto my news.

My first novel, Before I Break is now edited and revised and is up on Amazon in paperback and on Kindle just like before, and once again it is up for free for a week!  Please do not hesitate to checking the book out!  Even if you hate it, I would love to hear what people think.

And as for my next novel, the first book in my new series The Forbidden Darkness Chronicles, is going to be releasing a lot sooner than many of you might expect.  If you would like to help with the cover reveal and synopsis reveal, please don't hesitate to sign up!  In the next few weeks I'll send all the instructions.

This new series is paranormal and I really can't wait to share it with you. It is a bit of a jump of genres, but this series was planned for years before I finally have the courage to publish it.  The link for the sign up sheet is below.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Thunderclap Page

With the lack of readers lately, I have decided to start a Thunderclap.  A lot of you may have no idea what it is, so let me briefly explain.

Thunderclap is a site used for people promoting something--whether it be something of value or an event or *cough cough* a book--and it gets people from all around the world to see it.  The only problem is that I need 100 supporters on MY end before it actually goes up on the site for everyone to see.

This is where I need your help.  It's such a simple task, really, and I need as many of you to do it as possible.  Below, there is a link to the Thunderclap page, and you click that.  Once you arrive to the Thunderclap page, click on the "Support" button and share it on either your Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr.

It's free.  It's simple.  And I can't do it alone.

So everyone, please help me out.  The ones who have read and purchased my book have been a great help at kickstarting my career and I need your help to keep making this dream come true.

With two clicks, you can make this dream come true.

Planning a Book Tour

So my book has been out for almost two weeks and it's about time for me to start planning a book tour around my area.  This is where I need the most help I can get.

My book tour will most likely be in the Webster/Worcester area of Massachusetts and I am looking for places who are willing to have me come in.  I am looking for places like bookstores, libraries, and schools to either let me come and do a signing or some sort of public speaking.

Or both.

Any LGBT festivals, meetings or groups work as well.  If you are looking for an author to come and speak of the issues among the LGBT community, you can email me at bellealec@gmail.com.

I hope to hear from some of you soon.

Tennessee To Pass Law Allowing LGBT Bullying

Tennessee is now about to pass a bill that allows religious freedom in schools. This sounds like a good thing on the outside, but what will this do to other students?
For the longest time, people have wanted to be able to discuss their religious beliefs in schools, but many people haven't looked at the downside. Tennessee is about to pass a law that could do a lot of damage to students, especially those in the LGBT community.
In this bill, known as the "Religious Viewpoints Antidiscrimination Act", will allow students to be able to discuss their religious views in school. Students will be able to write answers like "God" as answers to chemistry test questions, do reports and papers on certain religious topics, and will even allow the freedom of religious speech. It sounds all great and dandy until you get to the one problem that is beginning to worry lots of people, including me. With this bill, students will not be allowed to preach hate in their schools as long as it abides by their religions. So what does this mean for LGBT students?
Let's look at an example. You're sitting in class and an evangelical Christian has an announcement from her church that she would like to tell the school--that homosexuality is a sin. They can tell you that you need to abandon your lifestyle or you're going to hell. They can tell you this all day long and the schools won't be able to do anything about it because it is a common Christian belief.
This, for me, is the problem.
Every day we have hundreds of people kill themselves. Approximately every 13 minutes someone commits suicide, and for me, with this type of speech now being allowed in schools, the suicide rate will only rise from here. We've come to a point in our country where we need to take a loom what we're actually telling people, because while you may think telling someone their going to hell for loving someone of the same-sex is a good thing, it really isn't. It's cruel. It's a misunderstood part of the Bible. It's something that we as people really need to examine a little bit more closely.
So what happens when gay students are going to be depressed, hurting themselves, or scared to go to school because of this freedom of religion in schools? For the longest time we've seen things on the news about girls who can't bring their Bibles to school, or how you can't put up flyers about God, etc. and we all wonder why. But now that this will no longer be an issue in some states, including Texas and Oklahoma, we need to look at the real reasons behind the ban of religion in school.
If we allow religion in schools, it will only cause more problems. It's not solving anything by allowing someone to tell everyone in their school that gay people are going to hell.
We need to take a stand against this, because as a Christian myself, I don't even agree with this bill. If it passes, there may be a lot more problems than we've had before.

Happy 17th Birthday to Who? Me!

Today is the day that marks my 17th year of living, and it also marks the 4th day since my book's release.  The funny thing is, I never really expected that I'd get this far after only 17 years, but turns out I did, and I am really looking forward to looking back on my life.

Sort of.

Some of you probably know me personally, but the ones reading this blog probably either don't know me or don't know me that well, and that's okay because today I feel like I want to tell the world a little bit about myself.  Not only do I feel like I can be myself, but with the release of my very first book, a lot of people are probably curious as to where most of the ideas came from.  And one of the questions I know people are probably dying to hear is whether or not Avery or Cyril's character is based off of myself in any way.

The answer to that question is...

.
.
.
.
.
.

Avery Branson was based almost entirely off of my life.

The thing is, I used to be a self-harmer and have tried to kill myself three times.  So writing from and outward perspective was a bit difficult for me, but I felt like Cyril saw exactly what I wanted him to see.

And I can proudly that I am 17 years old and I do not self-harm anymore and my depression is gone.  I've gone through a lot in the last few years, but today is the beginning of a new year for me, and I am going to use it wisely.

Happy birthday to me.

Update on the Sales

A lot of you may have already purchased a copy of BEFORE I BREAK, and right now the sales are doing just as well as I expected.  I do have to say that I am extremely happy about this week's sales and here is why.

My book is available on ebook for Kindle, which is great and dandy for some, even though I personally don't like them.  I prefer physical copies of books but that's just me.  But the one thing I do have to credit ebooks for is how almost immediately people have been getting and reading my book and I love that feeling.  And through Kindle, I am included in a program that allows my ebook to be free for a week.

Yes.  You heard right.

For one week, the ebook BEFORE I BREAK will be free, glory to Kindle Select, and it has caused my sales to skyrocket and the position on the Amazon Bestseller List to go from #300,000 to in the #5,000's.  Every hour new people are getting the ebook and trying it out.

Some of you may be wondering, Why does he want to sell his ebook for free?  That gets him no money.  Well, here is the honest to God truth:

When the book first came out, the only people buying my book were friends and family, which gave me about $20 by the time the royalties were calculated.   This left me feeling very weak, but I had to remind myself that I am self-published author and this is my fist book.  Then when I saw that I could make my book free for a week, I figured it might help get some hesitant readers who aren't sure about a new author a chance to try me out.

So sure enough, by the time I woke up, the rank of my book had changed and over 20 people had bought it by the afternoon.  And I use the term bought lightly because, well, you know why.  And now it's the end of the night and nearly 30 people have bought my book.  This means I have 30 new readers who will probably tell other readers, and then those readers will tell other readers who tell other readers.

Point made.

But like I said, after the week is over, it'll go back to it's regular $3.99 and new readers will have to buy it, but if people have heard it's good, there's a great possibility they'll be okay with paying a few books.

Below is the link if you want to check it out.  I really hope to start hearing from readers soon!

SURPRISE

A big a surprise today, and one that was actually unplanned whatsoever.  When I was working on Createspace and uploaded my book to Kindle Direct Publishing,  it actually released my book early!

Only 15 Days!

Can you believe there are only fifteen days until the release of first novel, BEFORE I BREAK?  I am just as excited as you guys are, and maybe even a little bit more, to be honest.

This process has been quite long and boring for the most part, but now with just about two weeks away, all the boring editing, editing, editing is done and I can begin major advertising!  There are only a few things left on my To-Do List!

1.  Get my book copyrighted.

On the 16th of this month, just days before the release of my book, I need to pay for the copyright application I filled out and then can move forward with publishing it.

2.  Order my proofs (ARCs)

I will finally be able to order a physical copy of my book and be able to give a few out to book bloggers for free, so if you're interested, please let me know!  I'll only have about 4.

3.  Plan mini book tour.

The two main states I plan on visiting are MA and SC for right now, but probably not anywhere else for a while.

Are you ready for BEFORE I BREAK?

Before I Break COVER REVEAL

Okay guys, I have been super slacking on this lately, but about a week ago I got the cover for my first novel that I've been speaking about, BEFORE I BREAK.  Here it is!

You have no idea how excited I have been about this book, and along with the cover, the release date is set for September 19th!

There are several things I'd like to point of the book.

1. The light bulbs are actually symbolism. When Nikki first asked what I would like as a background picture, I knew right away that I wanted the lightbulbs. The lit bulb represents Avery, my gay supporting character, and all of the other broken light bulbs represents my main character, Melissa, and Jake. Why? Read the book and find out.

2. The "Before I" part is written like handwriting because the book, while fiction, is written like a memoir as Cyril recaps everything that happened "before he breaks." The "Break" does a very good job of representing his emotions and gives the cover a little pop.

3. And lastly, the shattering glass represents Cyril's world as everything falls apart in the blink of an eye. The black background represents his darkness and Avery is his light.

Please be sure to check out my book on Goodreads for reviews and information!

Discovering My Writing Flaws

The title of this post basically says it all.

Everyone has their own writing flaws, things that cause the writer to look their book and think, "Was I high when I wrote this?" or "What uneducated 10 year old wrote this?"  Today I discovered some of my very own writing flaws, and I want to dedicate this post to that.  I always want to point out that a Writing Flaw is not necessarily something you do "wrong" but it is more of something you do that could use improvement.

So the first thing I do that's "wrong" is rush my story.  I have a very hard time writing the beginning of the book because I want to get to the meat of my story;  or if you're a vegetarian, the fruit of the story.  When I begin a book, while I don't necessarily have a step-by-step plot outline, I know what the main climax is going to be, so most of the book is me writing to see how my characters get to the climax.  I love seeing my characters take on a life of their own.

The problem with that is that these characters aren't supposed to know all holy hell is about to break loose in their world, which means I have to train myself to not force the climax to come quicker than it needs to.  While I go through and edit BEFORE I BREAK, I am definitely adding a lot more things than there was originally going to be.

Secondly, I am terrible at description.  When I read a book, I always get annoyed if an author uses too much description, describing every intricate detail about the room.  Like, seriously, I do not need a whole paragraph describing the color of the wall.  So when I write, I tend to lack writing description and realize when I read my book it's difficult to imagine things in my head, or at least it would be for a reader.

Today is the day that I fix those problems.  While I edit, I hope I can make BEFORE I BREAK one of the best books you guys have ever read.  Be sure to check out my GoFundMe page, my Facebook page, and my book on GoodReads.

First Day of Edits (And Fighting and Crying and Stress)

Today was one of those days that seemed to be great overall, but there were seriously some parts I could have lived without.  Even now as I sit here writing this, I swear I might nod off any second.  Unfortunately, I feel like I have been slacking on you guys lately.

As many of you know, my very first book, BEFORE I BREAK, is coming soon.  Today, there were some revelations for me and some good news.  First of all, I have raised $125 on GoFundMe so far, which is enough to pay my cover artist (who is author Nikki Rae, by the way).  I should have the cover in like 2 weeks, and possibly less depending on how quickly she works.  Secondly, apparently there is a way to get hardcovers of my book, as opposed to the paperback and ebook you can order off of Amazon.com.  I have to personally order the hardcovers and sell them myself, meaning you will need to come to a signing in order to receive a hardcover.

That to me is a big deal because hardcovers have always been my favorite, no matter what.  The other good news is that I am aiming for an October 20th release date--this may or may not change depending on how long the editing process takes.  All of this is very exciting and very overwhelming.

Also, just to let everyone know, this may be my only book published through Createspace.  I have been looking into DogEar publishing for my first series, which I plan to release in the fall of next year.  I refuse to speak too much about that, but unlike BEFORE I BREAK, it is a paranormal series about Monster Hunters and mental illnesses, cutting, etc.  Does it sound intense?  It will be.

So now after a long day, I am officially ready to go to sleep.  Be prepared.  Tell your friends.  Spread the word.  This book is coming and it's going to be one that any John Green and Ellen Hopkins fan will love for sure (they were my influences as I wrote this).

Everyone have a good weekend, while I sit and stare at my word vomit I call a book.

GoFundMe Page

So I was originally going to do a Kikstarter, but that didn't seem to be too successful.  Instead, I decided to start a GoFundMe.  I have offered some rewards to anyone who donates the money to help support the creation of my first book!

Getting Back to Work

A lot of you may be wondering why I have yet to post anything about my first novel, BEFORE I BREAK.  For the last couple of weeks, my life has basically been a living hell, so I haven't really had the time to focus on my book like I would have wished.  Now that I am finally having some free time (most likely 6 months, to be exact), I can work on the book I feel like I was born to write.

The first thing that I am working on is getting a Kikstarter.  Because I am under the age of 18, my aunt is deciding to use it for me, so I can get the money I need to publish this book, which is only about $500.  On Kikstarter, if you don't know what that is, you can basically add little gifts to people who donate money for your project.  You, the backer, doesn't get charged for the money you donated until after the project is fully funded.  Also, another interesting fact, is that I can set a date between 30 to 60 days, and if I don't reach the amount of money I need within that time, I do not get any of the money and no one gets charged for donating.

I am not 100% that this is going to happen yet, but I will post in a few days if it goes up.  Help spread the word about BEFORE I BREAK to raise to hype!

Day 1: Read-Through and Edits

Today I begin my first day working on the read-through and edits of BEFORE I BREAK.  One of the things I noticed about the book was how quickly is started, and it makes me wonder whether I started things too fast, or if I may have rushed it.  Maybe it's perfect just the way it has.

Haha, nope, never mind.

I do have to say that I am very excited to actually be starting with this, but it's a lot more stressful than I anticipated.  Not only do I have to pay for copyright, I also need to find a way to pay for the cover and professional copyediting, which will add to about $300, which I do not have.  So what does that mean for me?  I haven't really figured that out yet.  With no job and no income, I am finding this a lot more difficult than anticipated.

So far, from the friends and family that have read it, the response has been very good, and I trust these people enough to tell me if it sucks or not.  Trust me, they've done it before.  With that being said, I know I've gone in a wonderful direction, and according to one family member, even tears were formed at the end.  I hope the response from my readers will be just as good.

In case anyone is wondering, I also have a Wattpad account (my username is AlecBelle, no space in between) and have some interesting things on there.  If you're curious about my writing style and voice, I recommend checking it out.

Now back to work.  The work that I may put off for another day...or two.

BEFORE I BREAK on Goodreads

Just thought I would let everyone know that BEFORE I BREAK is finally on Goodreads.  Below is the link, so be sure to add it to your to-read shelves!

My First Published Book

A lot of you guys don't know me, but for a while I've been running the blog, Book Freak Forever, and now here I am with my new blog.  My author blog!

I know, it's exciting, and I'm proud to say that my first book will be published before the end of this year, although there is no set release date.  Part of the issue for me, is that I have chosen the self-publishing route because I feel it better suits my needs.  In order for this to be a successful novel, I need you--yes you!--to help me out.

First things first, let me say that I do not feel like any less of an author because I have chosen to self-publish this book.  There are a lot of authors who would say that it does, but for me, this feels like the right choice to make.  And because my first novel is a standalone, it gives me more of an opportunity to try out the aspect of self-publishing before I choose to go that route with a series that I am currently working on.

So let's talk about my book for a moment.

What is the title of my book?

The title of my book is BEFORE I BREAK and it fits the story really well (and the name of the title is used several times at the end of the book as well).

How long is the book going to be?

The current page number of the manuscript is 196 pages, so it could be more of less when published, especially depending of the size of the book.  I'll imagine it will be around 250 pages.

What is the genre of BEFORE I BREAK?

The genre is contemporary YA and is aimed specifically toward teenagers, and it does feature some tough subjects like homosexuality, religion, betrayals of friends, and more.

The synopsis?

I will not be sharing the synopsis until I get the work copyrighted, which should be within the next couple of weeks.

When will we get to see the cover?

The cover will most likely be released in July.

And lastly, what is the release date of the book?

That has been undecided, but I am aiming for a late August/early September release date.  This is most likely to change.

So keep a look out for more posts about my novel.  Please help share to spread the word!
